ASTM
ASTM International (formerly American Society for Testing and Materials), is an international organization that provides standards, develops and publishes voluntary consensus technical standards for a wide range of materials, products, systems, and services. ASTM E-84 is standard Method of Test of Surface Burning Characteristics of Building Materials
Flame Spread
Flame spread is a rating between 1 and 100 which indicates the relative rate at which a flame will spread over the surface of the material. General comparisons are asbestos-cement board, which is rated 0, and on red oak, which is rated 100. Flame spread is defined in three classes:
- Class A or "I" - Flame-spread 0-25, smoke developed 0-450.
- Class B or "II" - Flame-spread 26-75, smoke developed 0-450.
- Class C or "III" - Flame-spread 76-200, smoke developed 0-450.
The purpose of this test method is to determine the relative burning behavior of the material by observing the flame spread along the material. Both the flame spread and the smoke developed are documented during testing.
