There are two types of noise that transmit through a floor: impact and airborne. Impact noise is the result of people walking on the floor. Footfall causes vibrations in the floor. These vibrations spread through the floor, into joists, and then pass through the ceiling of the room below. It could also be from objects being moved or rolled across the floor, or vibrations such as those from a washer or dryer. Airborne noise is the sound that travels through the air, whether it's people talking, a loud TV or thumping music.

All flooring projects begin with a sub-floor and can be complimented with other materials. Flooring underlayments are used to soundproof a floor. It's important to choose the right type of underlayment for the flooring type.
